Apex Legends S11 | Storm Point - Lightning Rod Surrounding Terrain

I had the opportunity to be the Zone Owner for the terrain around the Lightning Rod. This was the first zone I worked on as well as the very first zone of Storm Point that was handed off for art. I worked closely with our Level Designer, Rodney Reece, as well as the Environment Map Lead for Storm Point, Jose Zavala, to prove out a few things in this zone that could be replicated by other artists as they started work on their respective areas. One of these things was figuring out our metrics and style for the asphalt roads, which run throughout the entirety of Storm Point. Jose Zavala worked on the materials and prototyping the roads beforehand and we worked together to make adjustments to them to get the final look and metrics to work with our vehicles in game.

This zone also uses my "Dry Mountain" style that I had the chance to own and served as the first zone to nail down the style in a way that could be usable and replicated throughout the map. This zone is mostly dirt, so decals were heavily used to add detail, hide tiling, and to help with transitions. It was a challenge finding the right balance, but served as a good learning experience to help with other zones.

This zone style also uses several specific foliage models I created or were assets I retextured to fit the look. I worked with Jobye-Kyle Karmaker when creating these foliage assets and learned a lot of new SpeedTree tips from him!

Along with the organic terrain, I also had the opportunity to work on several hard surface elements to the zone. These areas are used to ground the IMC buildings and leverage the style and materials created by Brooke Olson and Richard Rude. These areas were then used as jumping off points for several similar areas in other zones.
